Foreign students who wish to study in Spain need a student stay permit. The new 2024 Immigration Regulation has introduced significant changes that widen the options available to students, including improvements to combining study with work.

Student stay permit

This allows you to live in Spain to complete full courses, research work or training. Its duration matches that of the course or programme. You must be enrolled at an authorised institution, have sufficient financial means and hold medical insurance. The application is processed at the consulate in your country of origin.

Combining study with work

Students may carry out part-time employed work (a maximum of 30 hours a week), provided it is compatible with their studies. The new Regulation has made this easier by removing some earlier requirements. There is no need to apply for a separate work permit.

Change of status to residence and work

Once your studies are complete, you can apply to change your student stay permit into a residence and work permit. This is one of the most sought-after procedures, and the new Regulation has relaxed the requirements, making it easier to retain talent trained in Spain.

The 2024 rules

The 2024 Regulation brings significant improvements for foreign students: it is easier to combine study with work, the grounds for changing status have been widened, and there is a new job-seeking permit once studies are complete. We will advise you on how to make the most of these new opportunities.
