The non-lucrative residence permit allows foreign nationals to live in Spain without carrying out any employed or professional activity. It is designed for people who have sufficient financial means to support themselves and, where applicable, their family throughout the period of residence.

Who is it for?

This type of residence is ideal for retirees, people living on private income and those with assets or passive earnings who wish to settle in Spain without working. It is also an option for those starting their migration process who do not yet have a job offer but do have financial means.

Financial requirements

You must show that sufficient financial means are available. As a benchmark, 400% of the monthly IPREM (the Spanish public income index) is required for the main applicant, plus 100% of the IPREM for each additional family member. These funds may come from unearned income, savings, pensions, investments or other regular sources of income.

The procedure

The application is filed at the Spanish consulate in your country of origin. A non-lucrative residence visa is required and must be obtained before travelling to Spain. Once in Spain, you apply for the Foreigner Identity Card (TIE) within one month of entry.

Renewal and change of status

The initial permit is granted for one year and can be renewed for successive 2-year periods. After the first year, it is possible to apply for a change of status to a residence and work permit if the requirements are met. Our team will advise you on the best options for your situation.

Requirements and documents

The requirements and the documents you will need vary with the circumstances of each case. To find out what applies to yours, get in touch with the firm and we will advise you personally.
